Tier III Supports

Tier III is for students who still do not learn despite a Tier II intervention (<5% of students). These are typically small group or one on one instruction for classroom-specific or subject specific skills. Specialists may be enlisted depending on what the needs of the student are. Even with Tier III the intention is to provide enough time and instructional supports that the students can return to the traditional classroom. Interventions could include the following:

Focused Instruction During the Academic Day (examples below)

-          Integrated Math – A course developed to provide students who struggle in mathematics additional instruction in preparation for the MCAS test in grade 10.

-          Directed Study – Depending on the circumstances, a student may be invited into s supervised directed study. 

Focused Instruction Outside of the Academic Day (examples below; subject to grant approval)

-          Grade 6 Reading Remediation/Enrichment Program – A group of students who have been identified as requiring additional instruction were offered a separate, focused instruction period outside of the regular school day.

-          Grade 9 MCAS Mathematics Enrichment – A group of students who have been identified as requiring additional instruction were offered a separate, focused instruction period outside of the regular school day.

Referral for Special Education – Sometimes, a student’s struggles are reflective of a learning disability. Students who continue to struggle or who present signs of a learning disability may be directed towards neuropsychological testing.
