Student Opportunities

 Technovation Girls is the world’s largest global tech entrepreneurship competition for girls. The program offers students around the world the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and leaders. Since 2009, over 15,000 girls have participated from over 100 countries. The challenge is for a team of girls to build a business plan and mobile app that will address a community problem.

CHS would like to assemble a team (or teams) of grade 11 and 12 students for a second-semester Independent Study that will enter this competition. Students will be provided a mentor teacher, along with a curriculum and a series of webinars with industry experts. The program runs from January through June and requires approximately 5 hours of work per week, consistent with class time. You will earn 5 credits for this independent study. Mr. Willis is looking for someone interested in web design for an independent study to complete the building of "History of Cohasset Boys Soccer" site on Wix. Prefence given to a student who has some previous experience and can work relatively independently.

The Commonwealth GIS Credential is a multi session (hybrid meeting format) program that equips students with workforce-preparedness skills & competencies that are directly applicable to addressing community-based issues with GIS tools.  Successful completion of the program certifies students to offer their GIS skills tocommunity stakeholders - land trusts, conservation officers, watershed stewardship leaders, municipal planners, community resilience committees, etc. - to advance community goals while simultaneously building a portfolio of produces and experiences that advance individual goals.  https://ccscr.org/gis/

The Center for Student Coastal Research (CSCR), is the regional leader in actively engaging students in authentic, community-based, hands-on, environmental research.  Small teams of students address real problems in our region, problems that we see in our watershed.

We provide the research tools and training students need to conduct a rigorous study. We surround them with a supportive professional science & civic network. As a result, students produce and share actionable scientific findings of great value to community stakeholders.

Over time, CSCR students build an understanding of our coastal ecosystem that inspires them to engage in community stewardship activities whereever they live, study, or work.

CSCR offers students 3 unique opportunities for school-community recognition. Recognition from CSCR comes in the form of credentialing student work – our school partners determine how best to recognize student work with CSCR, be it in the form of credit, transcript recognition, or certificate programs.  Please see your school counselor for details.

If you’re passionate about the sciences and are a domestic student currently in your junior year of high school, we invite you to apply for the Research in Science & Engineering (RISE) program. You will spend six weeks at BU conducting university laboratory research with some of the nation’s brightest scientific minds while advancing your STEM knowledge and skills.

You will tackle research projects under the mentorship of distinguished faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.  Opt for the Internship track and you will spend 40 hours each week working on research projects designed by your mentor to help you acquire valuable technical and analytical skills while developing insight into the scientific process. You may choose from hands-on research opportunities in areas such as: astronomy, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, medical laboratory research, neuroscience, physics, psychology, and public health. You will present the results of your research at the Poster Symposium that concludes the program.

In addition, one day per week you will join the Practicum students for workshops aimed at building your academic and professional skills.

Blueprint is a weekend-long learnathon and hackathon for high school students hosted at MIT in early March. Blueprint is open to all skill levels, from first-time coders to veteran hackers! Over the course of Blueprint, you’ll learn coding skills from MIT students, form a team, and work on a cool computer science project with the support of our mentors! After Blueprint, you’ll not only have a project under your belt, but have the tools to do so much more.

Being a volunteer is one of the most meaningful ways that you can support the Trust. Learn more and apply to be a volunteer. No experience necessary!

Volunteers do everything from brush cutting and trail maintenance to fundraising, event organizing, and leading a hike. A volunteer might help lay out trails, clear debris, collect litter, and report vandalism.

Volunteers don’t have to be individuals. Perhaps your garden club, scout troop, walking group, or business would like to be involved with a particular piece of land.

A Volunteer Steward coordinates with the Director assigned to a specific property monitoring its use and condition a few times yearly, and submits an annual one-page report. Consider how easy it would be to be a steward for a Trust property that abuts your own. As a neighbor, you see its condition every day and know if there are issues that need the Trust’s attention.

Many schools have Community Service Requirements and volunteering can count towards the needed credit. As an example, the Trust conducts an Annual Earth Day Event where CHS athletes and students cleanup Bassing Beach and other properties. Find out about this and other volunteer opportunities.
